The story of York Redoubt:

The Canadian National Historic Site of York Redoubt‘s original batteries were built in 1793, at the outbreak of war between Britain and France. When French warships were reported in the Atlantic, harbour batteries were quickly erected to secure Halifax from attack.

In 1846 soldiers from an Irish regimen stationed at York Redoubt built the Roman Catholic church that sits on the hill just below the fort wall. It was named “Stella Maris” and means “Star of the Sea”. A ships bell hangs in the belfry of the church to this day. The twin towers have long been used as landmarks by mariners in Halifax Harbour. It was designated a Heritage property in 1994.

Today, visitors are invited to stroll along the many trails, wander among the armament and fortifications and enjoy spectacular panoramic views. The trail connects to Star of the Sea Bed and Breakfast.
